Q: What is automation?
A: The object of automation is to eliminate the continual lifting required under the manual collection mode. The hydraulic arm mounted on the truck grabs the cart, lifts, dumps, and returns the cart to the curbside.
   
Q: What are the benefits with the cart system?
A: The carts are more aesthetically pleasing than a multitude of cans and bags at the curb.
The carts are designed to withstand higher winds without tipping. Lids are permanently attached.
The carts are under full warranty for ten years.
The carts are easily rolled to the curb even when fully loaded.
The carts help reduce Worker’s Compensation costs.
The carts prevent pets and wild animals from access to contents.
   
Q: When will my route become automated?
A:

This was a phased process and one that is necessary to contain costs and to be progressive in the industry in order to stay competitive.  By the end of 2008, automated service was compete for all trash routes.  By the end of 2012, automated service will be complete for all recycle routes.

   
Q: Are these carts easy to maneuver?
A:

Yes, very easy. The cart is equipped with a convenient handle and a foot tilt pocket. The carts are easily balanced even with heavy loads.

   
Q: Do I own this cart?
A:

The carts are property of the City of Cuyahoga Falls. This will be clearly marked on each cart.

What if I move?

A:

The cart is coded to the address. Therefore, if you move, please leave the cart behind.

What if my cart is stolen?

A:

The City will replace your cart free of charge. Please contact the Sanitation Division for assistance.

   
Q:

Who is responsible for repairs to the cart? Cleaning the cart?

A:

The City is responsible for any repairs on the cart. Please contact the Sanitation Division at 330-971-8010 for assistance. A trained employee will be sent out to repair the necessary part, or replace the cart if needed. Pending the time of your request, this typically would be same-day service. However, the resident is responsible for cleaning the cart.

   
Q:

What if I have more trash than what the cart can hold?

A:

Larger families may find that an additional 96-gallon cart is needed at an additional $5.00 per month. This can be accomplished by contacting Utility Billing at 330-971-8250. Yard waste bags and properly bundled brush will still be collected curbside. If the customer is experiencing difficulty with accommodating their trash needs, the Division of Sanitation is available to work with you and provide recommendations. Limited Service Customers will be limited to the 48-gallon cart volume.

   
Q:

What if I have a special event or a party and more trash than one cart can handle?

A:

A “10 bag party pack” option is available for all full service customers.  Full service customers will have this option two times free of charge each year and a $15 fee after that.  The party pack is up to 10 additional bags (outside of your cart) that will be collected curbside on your regular service day.  All trash must be properly contained in plastic trash bags.  Limited Service Customers will be charged a $15 fee for each time.  Please contact the Division of Sanitation 24 hours in advance during office hours Monday through Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm to place your request for the party pack.

   
Q:

How will appliances and bulky items be handled? (Full Service Customers Only)

A:

Refrigerated Appliances- Place at curb on collection day, no charge
Other appliances- Place at curb on collection day, no charge
Couches and mattresses- Place at curb on collection day, no charge
Carpet- Installer takes, or place at curb on collection day. Carpet and padding must be rolled and taped or tied no longer than 5 feet, no charge
Construction Materials- Permit holders are responsible for disposal of contruction debris.
Cardboard- You may place at your curb on collection day. Cardboard should be flattened and placed in the blue-lidded recycle cart or taken to the Recycle Drop-off site on Gaylord Grove at Bailey Road. Styrofoam is not recycled.

   
Q:

What types of special cleanup periods will be offered? What items are acceptable?

A:

The City offers three (3) special cleanup periods for our customers on automated routes.  During the pre-determined weeks, there is no limit to additional bagged or bundled acceptable items, except bundled brush which is always a five (5) bundle limit.  Ample advertising for special pickups will take place at the appropriate time. 
Fall Cleanup- 2 weeks; the first two full weeks in September
Holiday Cleanup- 1 week; your 1st trash pickup date after Christmas day.
Spring Cleanup- 2 weeks; the first two full weeks in May.

   
Q:

What will happen to the one (1) bag service or Limited Service?

A:

Limited Service customers will receive 48-gallon carts.  They may also set out a blue-lidded recycle bin and utilize the yard waste program by using brown yard waste bags, but are not eligible for bundled brush service.  There will be a $30 charge to pick up bulky items, appliances and bundled brush.

Are other Ohio communities participating in a cart program?

A:

Yes. Several other Ohio municipalities are utilizing this type of collection. They include Bowling Green, Wadsworth, Columbus, Delaware, Warren, Cincinnati and Akron. However, this is a common operation with private haulers across the country.

   
Q:

Is it mandatory to participate in this program?

A:

Yes, the City has automated the trash program so all customers receive a City-issued trash cart.  The recycle program which offers Full Service customers a $2 discount is voluntary at this time, however it is highly encouraged to help lessen the amount of waste entering landfills and affecting our environment.
