The Cuyahoga Falls Electric System Receives Grant For Feeder Automation Project

The Cuyahoga Falls Electric System was awarded a research grant by the American Public Power Association’s Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED) program.

The utility received $50,000 to help purchase and install advanced technology distribution feeder automation equipment on its two largest distribution feeders. The recently developed technology is expected to increase power reliability to all 2,600 customers on those two distribution feeders. Reliability will be increased as the two distribution feeders will be sectionalized so faults on the main power lines will not take all customers out of power. Some customers will automatically transfer over to another feeder if their normal source of power is cut. This transfer of customers to another feeder would happen within one second. The project will also employ the concept of conservation voltage reduction, which is expected to slightly lower energy consumption and energy bills for customers with certain types of loads. This project will be evaluated for possible application on additional distribution feeders in the city. Running this project through the DEED program will allow other public power communities to learn from the project.

APPA is the national organization serving the interests of the nation’s more than 2,000 community- and state-owned electric utilities.  The association established the DEED program in 1980 to sponsor and conduct activities related to energy innovation that improve efficiency or lower costs in providing energy services to consumers of publicly owned electric utilities.  DEED funds are used to support innovative utility programs.  The Cuyahoga Falls Electric System is a member of APPA and DEED.
