South Front Street Redevelopment Kicks Off

Mayor, Don L. Robart invites the community to a monumental event; one that will change the landscape of Cuyahoga Falls forever.

On Tuesday, March 18, 2008, join Mayor Robart, the Ohio Department of Development and SRW Environmental Services for the first phase in the redevelopment of South Front Street - the demolition of the former Prospect Mold and Die Building.

"Through the City's diligent efforts in obtaining grant funding, the monumental task of redeveloping this beautiful riverfront corridor is becoming a reality", stated Mayor Robart. "This is just the beginning of a revitalized Front Street that will reconnect our residents to the Cuyahoga River."

The South Front Street corridor has been an area targeted for redevelopment since 2002 when the City began a series of planning charrettes for each ward. Well established in the 1800's as a powerful industrial district, this mecca for manufacturing turned its back on the river, prohibiting public access to the Cuyahoga River, (one of only 14 national heritage rivers).

In an effort to provide the catalyst for redevelopment, the Cuyahoga Falls Development Department secured a matching grant from the state of Ohio in 2003 for the purchase of the Prospect Mold & Die building located at 1817 Front Street. Additionally, the department applied for and received funding from the USEPA to conduct environmental assessments along South Front Street and to create a master plan for the redevelopment of the corridor.

Further, in 2007, the Development Department was successful in obtaining yet another grant from the State for $ 2.4 million for the remediation of ground water and soil contamination and the demolition of four buildings along South Front Street.

The first phase of the South Front Street redevelopment project will be the construction of a 2-acre tranquil urban park highlighted with beautiful flowerscapes, benches and lighting throughout. The existing Prospect Bridge will be replaced with a state-of-the-art, decorative pedestrian bridge incorporating areas for viewing the Cuyahoga River below. The new park will also feature a walkway leading down into the river gorge.

Join Mayor Robart on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at 1:30 pm for the demolition ceremony marking the beginning of this 'groundbreaking' redevelopment project. The ceremony will take place at the Prospect Mold site at 1817 Front Street.
