Cuyahoga Falls Named 2005 Solid Waste Operator of the Year

Service Director Valerie Wax Carr is pleased to announce the Ohio Buckeye Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America named the City of Cuyahoga Falls 2005 Solid Waste Operator of the Year. The Solid Waste Operator of the Year Award is considered, but not necessarily awarded each year, to a member of the Chapter who, as an operator, manages either a landfill, transfer station, material recovery facility, hauling operation, compost facility or special waste collections and processing facility. The award is also presented to an operator in the field of solid waste management that has demonstrated unusually noteworthy achievements and/or highly significant contributions.

Cuyahoga Falls is a premier municipal solid waste and recycling operation, which includes residential MSW collection, curbside recycling, curbside yard waste management and year round brush collection. In addition, the City offers a full service recycling drop-off facility for multi-family and commercial businesses, a dedicated cardboard route for commercial businesses and curbside MSW and recycling service for commercial businesses. The City also recently began a successful transition to automated collection of MSW and recyclables.

Finally, the City institutes an economic incentive, through reduced monthly fees, for those wishing to recycle. This effort along with the comprehensive services provided to the residential sector results in the City leading their County in per capita participation rates for recycling, availability of services from a municipal solid waste provider and the use of automation for managing municipal solid waste.

"I am pleased to see our City has received such a prestigious award. Our Sanitation Division is a dedicated group of individuals who truly deserve the recognition for their hard work and exceptional management of the division, said Mrs. Carr."
